Could you talk a little bit about the discipline of Acoulogy created by you, where language is of crucial importance… How, for example, the act of naming and describing reveals a complexity that is absent from the traditional musical notation?Michel Chion - The musical notation deals only with a very small part of all existing sounds. Music sheets aren’t interested in describing the sounds of the instruments themselves as well. Their only goal is to give simple indications to the musicians for performing a certain piece. In a musical score to be played by a piano, for example, it’s not written that each note of the piano starts with a certain intensity that decreases ineluctably with time… There is no point on saying that, since we already know it’s the sound of a piano… There are also a lot of sounds that can’t be represented by a musical score simply because they don’t have a precise note. Words in different languages are not enough as well to describe all the aspects of sounds. Nevertheless, their use makes us go forward and trust what can be achieved by language itself, starting with words that already exist and that we generally use very little. It must be said as well that I don’t think that the waveforms we see in every digital workstation today should be used as instruments of description. They’re just good in depicting variations of intensity of a sound, but they don’t tell anything about its other aspects. To progress successfully into employment in today’s music industry takes a lot of hard work, focus, commitment and passion.Choosing to work in the music industry is not for everyone. Your philosophy is “less is more.” What is the key to that philosophy? When does it become too easy to do too much?If I can get away with it, I would rather stay cleaner and get out of it what I want. Even our system is built that way. It’s built so that even though we have all those choices, we only need to have in the circuit what we’re using. We have it so that we can bypass everything whenever we want to. We’ve got it built in such a way that if we’re not using one, we switch it out and it’s bypassed completely; it’s not in the circuit at all. It all adds up. A lot of this stuff you could say, “It’s in, it’s out, it’s hard to hear any difference.” Some of these things are very subtle, but they add up, and if you do a lot of manipulating, you get down to the end and all of a sudden it’s “What happened? That doesn’t do the same thing to me. It doesn’t have the presence and excitement that it used to have.” You go all the way back to what you started out with and you go, “Uh-oh, I’ve lost a lot here and I didn’t notice it because I got used to this sound. I added another thing, I got used to that, and all of a sudden we’ve gone too far.” That can happen in mixing, it can happen anywhere, where all of a sudden this thing isn’t what it used to sound like, so we have to be careful. To progress successfully into employment in today’s music industry takes a lot of hard work, focus, commitment and passion.Choosing to work in the music industry is not for everyone.
